Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at forthvalleyservices@barnardos.org.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Domestic abuse is caused by a misuse of power by one partner / ex-partner over another.    Societal beliefs and patriarchal values can contribute to domestic abuse by condoning beliefs about gender roles and entitlement to power and control in relationships.  Those who cause harm may try to minimise or deny their behaviour. They may even try to blame it on their partner or someone else.  The behaviour is a choice made by the abuser to gain control and get what they want.

Leaving an abusive relationship is difficult for many reasons. For example:

  • They may be scared about the future or losing their children
  • The may feel ashamed or judged
  • They may not feel confident enough to make the break, or know where or how to seek help
  • They may be cut off from family or friends and feel they have no support network
  • They may be worried about coping financially
  • They may be too exhausted to take on any life changes or major decisions.
  • They may still have feelings of love for their partner
  • They may hope and believe that things will get better
  • They may feel safer being with their partner - knowing where they are and more able to judge their mood

Criminal and civil law offers important protections for individuals who are experiencing domestic abuse. A victim of domestic abuse has certain legal rights and protections
