Supporting my children

How we can help

How we can help

How we can help

picture of mum talking to child

We can support children, either individually, or together with their family to explore their worries, feelings and emotions in a way that is trauma-informed and sensitive to their needs.

We can work with you to improve relationships and communication at home with your children.

Where appropriate, we can also work with other professionals, for example, the Team Around your Child to create a supportive plan to move forward.

We will work with your children at a pace to suit them, allowing time to build a trusting and productive relationship with our staff.

We will:

  • Listen to your children's individual views and involve them in an age appropriate manner to contribute to your Family Plan
  • Help them to understand what is happening is not their fault
  • Advocate for them to ensure their rights are upheld and their views are understood
  • Help them to identify coping strategies
  • Support your children to heal from trauma
  • Arrange to see or speak with your children when, where and how it is best, and safest for them
  • Ensure your children's needs are met
  • Help to restore family functioning to enable your children to feel safe and secure

What you can do

How we can help

How we can help

There are many ways your child may be impacted by domestic abuse.  This can manifest in changes in emotional, physical and other behaviours.  For example:

  • Acting in a way that is inappropriate for their age
  • Struggling to keep friends
  • Lacking in confidence
  • Unable to control their emotions
  • Becoming withdrawn
  • Self-harming
  • Becoming involved in offending or substance use
  • Avoiding going to school

You can help them by:

  • Listening carefully to what they're saying
  • Acknowledging their feelings
  • Telling them it's not their fault
  • Telling them if you are seeking support and if you can, explain how this can help them
  • Reaching out for support
